Where do articulations typically go in music with lyrics? Note-side (as with instrumental music), or above the staff, to avoid collision with lyrics?
I do staccato and tenuto noteside; accents and anything else above the staff. I follow that rule pretty consistently. I'd make an exception if circumstances warrant it, but - other than two voices on one staff - I can't think of what circumstance that would be.
If this results in a staccato dot colliding with a lyric, I'll push the lyrics lower rather than move the dot above.
My focus is classical vocal, but I see a lot of pop vocal, too. I think a stemside staccato would look odd in either. Tenuto would look OK either way. Other than that, my rules match Crystal's suggestion of "always above".
