Dear folks,

Several of you have asked for my work-around for getting ties into second endings to look right and play right. So here goes:

1) Use the Smart Shape Tool set for slurs attached to measures to enter slurs to represent the ties. It helps to use a high viewing percentage.

2) With the MIDI tool active, select Note Durations from the MIDI Menu. Double-click the first measure of the second ending and drag-enclose the first note or chord.

3) Go back to the MIDI Menu and select Set To. Enter a negative number equal in EDUs to the note duration that begins the tie. For an eighth note, it will be -512; for a quarter note it will be -1024, etc.

Without Step 3, the note or chord at the beginning of the second ending will be struck. Step 3 allows the first note or chord in the second ending to begin at the time the note that starts the tie would begin, resulting in proper playback.

If you know of an easier way - or if this problem is fixed in 2004, let me know.

Hal
