Agreed, but the players know! I happen to play a 3-valve Eb tuba in our community band, because that's the instrument I was able to borrow. Lowest legitimate note is an AA natural. You can tell instantly when a composer or arranger has assumed that all band tubas are BBb, so I routinely have to rewrite the parts when they go too low for me. It took me a couple of years to figure out the fingerings that produce the half-wavelength notes below my theoretical lower limit, because the fingerings I used in Jr. High on BBb tuba didn't work.
