To that end, I had a similar problem.
With auto-save on (yes, I know, but I'm forgetful) I was in the middle of
playback.  The file is new, so it hasn't been saved yet.  Auto-save kicks in
during playback, and the program completely locked up.  I could stop, it
never gave me the dialog to give the piece a name.  I'm sure this is because
it hadn't been named, so it needed to show me a dialog, but the way finale
takes over the machine during playback prevented it.  I even had a difficult
time force-quitting the program�it didn't want to let me.
