I went to the email address provided by Brad Beyenhof, changed the format of my digest to or from (?) html I think, and this morning all is well; numbers in table of contents correspond with numbers NOW appear before each message. My thanks to all of you who tried to help.
So, if any of you have no reference numbers in the content of your digests, go to <http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/options/finale> and change to the OTHER digest edition.
