Lubricant won't usually help.

Make sure all the other components (other belts, perhaps even one to drive
the counter, if it's mechanical) aren't worn or sticking.

Clean the multipole record/play switch (usually at the end of a spring or
rod on the main board). Spray with contact cleaner, put in a blank
cassette, and go in and out of record mode numerous times.

But if it was a sudden change, I suspect the motor itself. Check the motor
speed control trimmer, usually hidden under a rubber seal on the back of
the motor. It can become dirty or corroded over a long time. Turn it back &
forth with a fine screwdriver, and return it to its original position. If
the speed is now steady, you'll need to make sure the pitch has been
restored before buttoning it up.

If that doesn't help (and I suspect it won't from what you say), the motor
itself may be gone. Many of them have an internal transistor/IC speed
control, and this will die suddenly. Some develop bad contacts, if it's a
typical little DC motor. These motors are cheap little devils, but will
cost you some $20 or more to replace. Plus, getting it out is no small
engineering job. :)
