I'm glad you've gotten it working. I'm not sure what you mean by "It ain't pretty" -- I've played from plenty of hand-engraved (read that as "old") music that has the same format structure and uses D.S. al Fine.
It's worked well for a couple of hundred years at least, so I see no need to complain about it now.
