I haven't tried it, but I assume you could just type a hard space on the next syllable, couldn't you?

You can keep the smart extensions turned on. In the Lyrics menu choose "Edit Word Extensions". Choose the handle of the offending extension and delete it. You can delete smart lyric extensions as well as unsmart ones!

Dear Readers,
I am working on a choral piece in closed vocal scoring, where lyrics are shared by all voices and are located between the SA and TB staves (like a hymn). I have to enter a short phrase of lyrics below the T/B staff. This happens when, for a very short section, the basses have their own text. Whenever I do this I can not stop Finale from creating a word extension following the last syllable of that phrase. Finale thinks, because there are no lyrics attached to the next note, that I want the basses to sing a melisma. That is not what I want. I want the basses to rejoin the tenors and read the lyrics above their staff. The only way I have found to stop this is to turn off Smart Word Extensions. This is, in all other respects, a great feature because it automatically creates word extensions which are the exact length and break at the end of systems. I really don't want to turn it off. I hate having to manually create word extensions. But as soon as I turn it on I get a word extension at the end of the phrase mentioned above. I tried entering an invisible syllable (alt+0160) but that makes no difference. Is there a solution to this?
Thanks to anyone who can help!!!
