Hope someone has some ideas - I use Finale 2000; just a very limited amateur
so upgrade isn't realistic. Downloaded Notepad yesterday so I could read
some files from newer Finale versions. Questions: Is it possible to open
newer Notepad files with F2K? If not, is there a way to save Notepad as
midi? And finally, if not; a Notepad only problem: I'm transposing files
from Bass Clef to Treble. Is there a way to change the clef? I can't see
it - what I've been doing is opening a new, blank file w/treble clef, and
copy/paste the notation from the bass file. For some reason, the dynamics
(bass file originally created with newer Finale) appear fine on the bass
file, but when pasted to treble, there's multiple markings superimposed on
each other; and I can't select them to delete them. Help file says to use
articulation tool, but no handle appears on dynamics. Can't select/delete
dynamics on original bass file either. Any ideas?

I don't use Notepad so I can't be sure, but if it can save files as midi files, that would be one of the file types in the drop-down menu at the Save As Type: blank in the Save dialog. It isn't a separate item in the file menu, same as with Finale.

It isn't much of an editing program, it is mainly there as a viewer so that others who don't use Finale (or are using older versions) can view Finale files. Don't expect much from it.

The only idea I have is to put a couple of dollars each week into a coffee can expressly for saving up to buy an upgrade of Finale (the new version is usually released in August these days).

The dynamics would be expressions, not articulations, so you're trying with the wrong tool. Remember that NotePad is simply a tiny subset of Finale, so things work basically the same as with Finale, with the exception that most of Finale's functionality is disabled in Notepad.

There's a reason Notepad is free.
