Far be it for me to defend WinXP, which I think is a disaster, but 
your situation is very unusual. Sounds like bad drivers for video or 
some other basic hardware component.

There is nothing inherent in WinXP that leaks memory over time. It's 
obviously something to do with the configuration shipped by the 
vendor you purchased from, which pretty clearly points to hardware as 
the specific problem. The OS can't fix badly written drivers, though 
it can insulate you from some of the dangers of them (though if they 
are bad video drivers, it can easily take Windows down, 
unfortunately).
