The other answers you have received tell how to do this on an instance by instance basis. You can also do it globally, werever rests are exactly duplicated in two or more layers (e.g., both layers have a quarter rest on beat 3). To resolve all such instances in an entire piece (or in any selected region) with a single operation, use the invaluable "Join Rests of Multiple Layers" plugin from Tobias Giesen's plugin suite TGTools.

This plugin doesn't delete or hide anything. Rather, it makes duplicate rests exactly overlap each other, so that only a single rest appears. This is valuable not only in itself, but in that you will not then have to go and unhide anything when you extract parts.
