I've used the VPC system, some work arounds on comb binding, and
folded/stapled binding.

If you can print on 13x20 paper (I use a GCC printer), and can reduce
your score to 10x13, you can print booklets, fold, and use a saddler
stapler on 20 pages (5 pieces of paper), or even 24 pages. I've moved
to this for my parts and shorter scores.

At 11x17, you can use the VPC for parts or short scores, but anything
over 12 - 16 pages is not apt to hold up after much normal use.
Conductors are rarely careful turning pages, and too often pages have
torn out after very few uses. This is especially the case if they look
at the score in any way other than on a flat surface (hand-held for
example).

For all of my 11x17 scores, I use a comb binder. I own my own so I
don't need to wrangle a copy store employee to do this.

I set the left edge guide as short as it will go, punch holes from one
end, and then line the holes up and punch from the other. That gives
me holes aligned properly down the length of the score. I bind using a
full comb along the bottom first (where it needs to most strength.)
You may trim down another comb for the top, but I find that it tends
to fold there, so I remove the spirals from the top comb where it
overlaps the bottom comb, insert the pages using the machine, and then
tuck the spine inside the first comb. That's results in a nice strong
edge. These bindings have been much sturdier than other systems I've
tried.

You'll need to play with it to figure out which side to trim and tuck.

Oh--one other point of comparison.
The VPC for 11x17 is $499. A heavy-duty (manual) IBICO spiral binder
is less than $300. Also to throw into the mix, though, is that
customer service at VPC is excellent. They will help you with any
problems you may run into.
