Are you using the GPO playback or the soundfont playback? I bet you're
using GPO -- having too many instruments play at once is often something
that overpowers a computer and creates the sort of digital distortion
you're describing.
Several things to try in addition to what Darcy has already suggested:
1) set the dynamics softer for the percussion at the points where the
distortion occurs;
2) try using the soundfont playback and see if the problem persists;
