Chuck, The only things SMF cares is MIDI channel and Patch number. If you don't want any tracks to be combined, you just give distinctive channels. This is where tricky stuff is when it comes to Vi because most of Vis, except Kontakt, won't accept patch change so you have to create dedicated tracks with distinctive channel assignment.
