A re-install got the MP3 capability back. I have no idea why it did not work at all.
I am still getting what Michael Goode (of RECORDARE) thinks is a hardware problem. Since his DOLET 3.02, I no longer have his great plugin in place. Also I get an error message from XP that does not allow itself to be passed on to Microsoft. Has anyone else had this problem?
