Well, in conducting class (at UConn), we had to purchase a couple of reduced scores, and then had to conduct from them to a record playing of the piece in question. Obviously, as a practice, on our own time.

In retrospect, as a fairly successful conductor of community groups, I wonder if it really helped.

I guest conducted the UConn band at my high school for one number when they came for a school assembly.

I got many comments, from the UConn band students, that I looked exactly like their director, who, of course, had taught me in the conducting class ;-)
