If you enter it as a metatool (hold R, click bottom note of chord) then it will auto-size to the height of the chord. If you don't attach it to the bottom note, it won't auto size, and you will have to drag the handles to resize it.

I vaguely remember long ago using a character to mark chords that are to be rolled. As I remember I could enter the character and drag it to any desired length. The ones I can find are all fixed length.
