This is a very creative work around. But you are correct, I hope there is an easier way.

What I did here was to make three 8th notes into one 8th note beat space
using Tuplet Tool,
Made two 8th note's stems go away with Special Tools,
Extend the middle 8th stem with Special Tools,
And drew two stems with Smart Shape Tool.

Hm.  I just realized I haven't done this since FinMac3.2 days.  There
got to be a better way!
