I'm sure that this is so obvious as to be completely wrong and not a viable option, but that's what I've done so far (without the clean-up options)

Standalone CD recorders are absurdly overpriced and ill-suited to this task, which really does require a computer for audio editing, cleanup, creating track markers, etc.

Andrew's best options (since he's said he needs to buy a new turntable anyway are), in order of simplicity, are:

1) Get a turntable with a direct USB output, and record the output using software designed for cleaning up input from LPs. (Often this software comes with the USB turntable.)

2) Get a turntable with a built-in preamp and connect it to the audio input on his iMac using a good RCA-pair-to-miniplug cable, then record the output from the turntable using software designed for cleaning up input from LPs.

3) Get a turntable and a standalone preamp (I have one made by TCC that I'm quite happy with), make sure the turntable grounding cord is properly connected to the preamp, then connect it to the audio input on his iMac with a good RCA-pair-to-miniplug cable, then record the output from the preamp using software designed for cleaning up input from LPs.

4) Get a portable digital recorder (like an Edirol R-1), connect it to your existing stereo amplifier, record your LPs using your existing turntable, bring the digital recorder upstairs and hook it up to your iMac (it has a USB connection), copy the audio file to your iMac, and edit it using software designed for cleaning up input from LPs.

All of those options are cheaper, more convenient, and yield better results than using a standalone CD recorder.

Cheers,

- Darcy
