Will:

With respect to your post, in which you wrote, in part:
A colleague sent me a MUS.file of something he has written and, indeed, I can open it with my Finale (2007) and read the score, but it will not play it. When I try to play the piece, a message appears saying that the file has been written using an earlier version of Finale and that I need to install a plug-in in order to be able to play the piece.
You've had responses helping you understand what a plug-in is, but if there has been a response to the portion quoted, I've not seen it. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the error on my system, either, when I try to open a file created in an earlier version in 2k7. More information is needed here, including at minimum what version of Finale your colleague is using; what platform you and the colleague are each on, and the exact wording of the error message.

My guess is that the issue has to do with GPO. It may be that your colleague's document is asking for instruments that you do not have installed in your preferred playback environment. Try going into the MIDI menu and temporarily de-activating the GPO playback, or try going to the instrument list in the Windows drop down menu, and changing the assignments of instruments to staves.
