You didn't mention which platform. Did you try this one? http://www.bytescout.com/avitompegscout.html It works here, and it's free. The freeware versions of movie format converters seem to be in short supply, which I suspect is a consequence of patents (I had to buy a separate MPEG2 module in the first version of Sony's low-end version of Vegas).
