That's the only kind of messages there are. This group does not have
a web-based discussion forum or Usenet group.

Then I would say they're not really characters or brackets at all,
just screen artifacts of something. Do they disappear when you force
a screen redraw? Can you post a screenshot somewhere? (Please do not
send an image file to the list; put one up online somewhere and just
send the URL.)
