Don't forget also that trumpets and drums (and later clarinets, at 
least in Salzburg) were often not on the list of paid players, as 
they were brought in from court-associated military establishment as 
needed. Likewise, it was often the case that choristers doubled on 
instruments, and those were often provided from educational 
institutions as well.

So, easily 1/3 or more of the musicians available for massed 
instrumental performance might not be listed as being paid to play in 
the "orchestra."
