A belated thanks to all the people who sent suggestions about why I can't hear the strings very well and am overwhelmed by the GPO Steinway. I'll try all these suggestions but thus far I'm still mystified. And frustrated.
My excuse for not replying sooner, by the way, was a sudden retinal repair, and I mention it because everybody ought to know the symptoms of retinal problems. A fully detached retina is a medical emergency, and delay can result in blindness. And a small tear will quickly lead to a detachment. My symptoms were an annoying gray speck in my peripheral vision which would not rinse away, and within a few hours flashes of light along the edge of the eyelid. Fortunately I remembered the symptoms of retinal detachment. Twelve hours later I was lucky enough to have a laser photo coagulation repair on a small tear, which was terrifying but resulted in no significant pain.
