"Check for new mail -> Manually" should theoretically solve that
issue. There's also the "Go Online" and "Go Offline" menu commands.

Haven't looked at it for a while. Last time I looked it couldn't
use Modem connections (it would try to receive or send whenever it
was launched). Thunderbird seems to be much more sophisticated.
