But it's disconcerting that the same notation which seems to be a tuplet in m5 is an ordinary dotted-quarter-plus-8th in m4 and m6!

Though probably not disconcerting to folks of the time, when there was so much about music that was just "understood". For instance, Kim's screenshot is only a snippet, but I'd bet that there's no tempo marking. That might throw someone in 2007, but certainly wouldn't in 1707. In the same way that we can all look at Graupner's mm. 4-7 and understand what should be played, musicians of the time would have understood the same thing -- and Graupner would have understood that they'd understand.

Living in a world that seems to unduly prize consistency, we're obliged to be more precise in our notation. (And even if we don't feel so-obliged, Finale will oblige us!) Gödel must be spinning in his grave!
