I find that the best comparison is with Rousseau, who likewise was highly and productively influential, but whose own compositions are so-so.

That said, however, I think that much--even most--of what Cage wrote before 1952 is of the very highest caliber. It is difficult, for example, to imagine what the percussion ensemble would be without _Amores_, _Double Music_, or _Third Construction_.
