I see you've never actually grappled with the actual meaning of it, 
as opposed to the one-paragraph synopsis.

No, it's actually about the struggle of the artist who values the old 
ways but needs to move beyond them to express what he has to say. I 
see it as autobiographical, myself, but also very much related to 
Wotan's struggle in the Ring cycle.

Of course, I've had the benefit of extensive study with one of the 
world's leading Wagner scholars, so maybe I'm able to appreciate 
subtleties that escape others.
