Jef: the problem with flame wars--besides the obvious issue of rudeness--is
that they always go on 300 posts too long. The positions are staked out pretty
clearly in the first e-mail or two, and from then on it's just a pissing
contest.

The reason I quite consciously didn't name any composers who "have no clue"
in my post is that I'm sure I would inevitably list someone else's favorite
guy. Then it begins all over again.

Let's say, hypothetically, that Phil Daley doesn't really like any music
after about Landini. Ask yourself the question, "Does that matter?" If anyone
has
some sort of obsessive need to convince Phil that Machaut might be OK as well,
that's *their* issue, not Phil's. Plus, they can be reasonably sure--having
lived in the world for awhile--that their argument is not going to prevail
anyway.

Speaking as someone who has now added post #301 to the list, here are two
pieces of advice: 1) if someone says something OT that you consider stupid, try
if possible to let it go (something incorrect about how Finale works is a
different issue); 2) if someone needs to tell you how ignorant you are, delete
their post.
