Thanks Eric. That was it.
I guess it goes to show that if one just works in a limited way and
just do what you always do, you can miss things.
I'd never heard of "insert mode" so I went back to previous versions
of Finale, looked in the speedy menu, and sure enough there it is.
But in all my previous versions it hasn't been the default setting.
So it was never checked and therefore I never used it.
Ah, so much to learn and yet somehow we all churn out the work :)
