nope - no low A's . Only bari - and not all, esp. older ones, but you can write it.

Actually - Wikipedia article says a "few rare altos made by the Selmer Co." have a low A. Don't bank on that note, though, unless you have a very rare Selmer owner in the room.

We recorded a piece for orchestra by Carlos Chavez, the "Horsepower Suite," many, many years ago, that had low A's in tenor sax part - player was taking it up an octave. (I had mentioned to the player, whom I knew pretty well, that he could play the whole passage, which was quite low and difficult, on bari, but that seemed to blow his mind). At the recording session, when the conductor realized what the player was doing, he put in a quick cut in the piece to omit the offending passage - very odd!

Most modern bari saxes now have low A as standard, but what about sopranos,
altos and tenors?

A friend of mine, nice alto player and fair soprano player, is currently
bemoaning the lack of low A on her soprano.

I've never heard alto, tenor or sop with low A- but then I'm not a
saxophonist.

Any thoughts?
