G'day Carl.
My wife and I are still using FinWin 2004. I'd love to hear whether you
think that upgrading was worth it, and what you have gained with the new
version. And also what you've lost...

I finally ordered my Finale upgrade. I've been using 2K4, and it has done

What pitfalls should I be on the lookout for?

Well, FinWin10 arrived by UPS yesterday, but I had a gig, so tonight has been my first chance to play with it.

As Jack Ellis noted, you have to run as administrator under Windows7 to register the program, and it was a bit hesitant to make some of the changes to the default file for some reason (could just have been me, or Windows not liking jazz), but so far it has run very well, withj no hiccups not caused by me.

The 'pick' tool (combination of mass mover and select, as far as I can tell) is relatively obvious, and getting used to it only took a couple of attempts - it grabs partial measures by default - but it works well. Note entry has been pretty straightforward, and I haven't used any expressions other than rehearsal marks yet, but those worked very simply and quickly.

The sounds library for playback is enormously better, and I'm looking forward to playing with dynamics and other expressions, and to building my libraries, as the expressions they have available are not as varied as I'm used to. I want to check and see what fonts are on this machine before I get into chords, though. (This PC is brand new, and I haven't had much time off since I set it up, so some of the fonts I use all of the time are not installed yet).

But so far, Finale 2010 has worked pretty well.

I'll report back when I've done some more in-depth work, but the most positive things I have to say so far is that it isn't as big a change as some that I've seen in about 20 years of using the program, and I like it so far.

Carl
