Sometimes the pronunciation differences can be useful. I remember being in England, and in the company of a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana (Noter Dayme). Someone English asked her about her studies at Notre Dame (pronounced the French way). After thinking for a split second that he thought she'd studied at the cathedral in Paris, we both started laughing.

Now, as a resident of Maryland, we have, in Baltimore, a college called Notre Dame, but pronounced Noter Dom. I think it is nice to have three pronunciations so we can be clear about what we're talking about.
