I haven't installed 2012 yet so forgive me if I am off base here. Assuming it is the same as 2011, default files do not contain file extension. They are controlled by type/creator which is FIN3. I think it is a left over from Finale v3 from 90's. Haha. By the way, regarding hide extension pref, I believe you need to engage it from Finder pref globally.
