finally got some insight on what may have caused renegade "ghost
staves" in my document.
there is a documented issue with applying the "hide staff" staff
style (e.g. for cutaway scores) using the context menu and switching
between page / scroll view.
instead, make sure to use the metatool ("h" in the default doc) to
hide staves using the staff tool / staff styles.
