That makes no sense to me. I do this all the time, and the only problem I come up against is that note-attached smart shapes disappear when I put in slash notation in the same bar with a slur.
Could it be that the staff style in question has things in it that AREN'T just slash or rhythmic notation? Check it to be sure.
