It seems that when I ask friends who know something about computers, they
always dismiss sound issues as irrelevant or petty. I figure there are probably
a few people here who care, though.

I have an HP Windows Vista laptop that is about five years old running Finale
2012. Recently, the sound has been cutting out, with a muffled and staticky
sound, almost as if there is a short. It's not a short, though, because the
problem is amplified (not an intentional pun) as the Finale file gets bigger.
Also, listening to the Naxos library creates the problem. Simple sounds such as
dings or short, low-quality videos are not affected.

What I'd like to know is this: Would a new sound card be a viable solution?
External? Internal? I don't want to shell out a lot of dough or make multiple
trips/online orders to experiment with the right fix.

Contrary to popular opinion, Vista has never caused me any problems, and I'd
like to keep this laptop going for a while longer. It has a good hardware
layout that I don't want to lose.
