Problem solved. I simply turned off Finale and started it again, and low and behold, no phantom notes. Old solution to many problems works again. John, I haven't noticed phantom playback notes yet, but I very often have "hanging" notes: notes that didn't receive the "note off" signal. It's a confirmed bug in human playback. If these phantom notes always appear at the same position in the score and you can't get rid of the, it may help to add "all notes off"-text expressions in these measures.
