Shape designer came up with the character (staff + rest + opaque block) except that the staff lines character doesn't line up with the staff lines, probably because I've set the staff line thickness different from the default. <http://maltedmedia.com/images/finale/opaque-rest-shape-designer.jpg> I am now officially giving up and going back to the layer kludge.
