Lecture: Friday May 1, 7-9 PM Dave Jacke Ecology, Design, and Agriculture: A New Synthesis The monoculture mindset of our current culture separates things that, in reality, interconnect deeply. Three related disciplines—the science of ecology, the art of design, and the practice of growing food—stand divorced from each other in America today. How might consciously designed agricultural ecosystems work? What might they look like? This evening talk will delve into core concepts and examples of ecosystem agriculture, focusing on “forest gardening” as a synthesis appropriate to the temperate deciduous forest biome. The ideas presented here will provide the framework for Saturday’s workshop experiences and Sunday’s design work. One-Day Workshop: Saturday May 2, 9 AM - 5 PM (1 hour BYO Lunch) Dave Jacke with Valerie Dawnstar Gardening Like the Forest: Fundamentals of Ecological Garden Design Integrate the vision, theory, design, and practice of ecosystem agriculture using the temperate deciduous forest ecosystem as a model! This one-day workshop will build on the ideas from Friday night by diving into the nitty gritty of habitat, patch, and polyculture design. Lectures, discussions, and observation and design exercises will reveal the essential nature nature of ecosystem architecture and social structure, and provide practical principles, patterns, and processes for garden design and management. Open Consultation: Sunday May 3, 9 AM - 5 PM (1 hour BYO Lunch) Dave Jacke Designing the Permaculture Living Lab Edible Ecosystem This open consultation will focus on the Permaculture Living Lab, a 38,500 square-foot garden site at Lee Hall Quad on the SUNY Oswego campus. The garden’s intended purposes include growing food, testing and demonstrating ecological appraoches to horticulture, research, education, meeting the social needs of users, and creating a place of beauty, as well as addressign functional concerns of the physical campus, such as drainage issues, access to buried utilities, and so on. This consultation forms a small part of a larger design process for the garden already underway. We’ll review the design work as it stands, fill in gaps in the goals and site analysis, and develop design ideas for the garden, making the design process as transparent as possible so all attendees can learn from the process, building off the experiences of Friday and Saturday.
