Thanks Anna! I love this campaign. I remember one of the regional permaculture gatherings at Omega (2012 I think?) during which we were talking about something like the "million acre challenge" since the emerging New England Food Vision was preliminarily - and somewhat arbitrarily - calling for a million acres in the six New England states to be in home/community food production. If Ryan Harb is still on these lists, he'll remember this for sure.
I often thought it would be an amazing research project to get some reality around how many acres are already in this kind of use and then get more accurate data about how many acres of "lawn" or similar are suitable for conversion. Of course there are many other factors that would require acting on that potential, but even knowing it would be pretty amazing. Thesis or dissertation anyone? Hit me up if you want to talk about quantifying how UNLAWNFUL we can get! I'm involved in conversations about updating the New England Food Vision and this is a big question mark with loads of traction.
