Since nothing else seemed to have any effect with my "cannot load font 'fixed'" error, I used Fink to deinstall/reinstall the xfree86-base and xfree86-rootless packages. I already had them cached on-disk, so this didn't take long. After a few minutes, the XDarwin.app disappeared, and a new materialised in its place. When Fink had finished, I tried double-clicking, and success!
