Dear Manuel,
I had the same confusion, or, rather, I went ahead and made the mistake.
The convention of fink seems to be that `base' in the name actually
installs the package, while `system' in the name looks for a package that
is already present in your system. For me (another beginner) it is
more logically the other way around, but this is the choice that was made.
It would be good if this convention were documented in the fink FAQ or
another place that a beginner could easily find it.
