It is clear that something is wrong here, but what it is can only be determined by looking on your hard disk. What does this file look like? In any case, it is a very old version. In your place, I would throw away all your package descriptions and check them out again from cvs. Some of your symptoms could also be explained by the zero-file-length disease that affects /sw/bin/tar, /sw/bin/gzip and some others.
