This worked, but I blew it all right at the end by giving the wrong
response:

Configuration file `/sw/etc/apt/sources.list'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
     Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
     N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** sources.list (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? N

The core packages have been updated. You should now update the other
packages
using commands like 'fink update-all'.

% fink update xfree86-base xfree86-rootless
sudo /sw/bin/fink update xfree86-base xfree86-rootless
Password:
Information about 22 packages read in 1 seconds.

Failed: no package found for specification 'xfree86-base'!
% fink update-all
sudo /sw/bin/fink update-all
Information about 22 packages read in 1 seconds.

No packages to install.

I started over, I tried everything I could think of, but I can't get
back to that crucial step of updating sources.list.
