[Fink-beginners] clhep-1.8.0.0-1

I'm just starting to use clhep (I previously used the rpm version as given by http://www-jlc.kek.jp/~fujiik/macosx/10.2.X/ ).
When I try to link my programm, I get this kind of message:
ld: archive: /sw/lib/libCLHEP.a has no table of contents, add one with ranlib(1) (can't load from it)
I'm willing to obey, still:
1) what does this mean?
2) how can I 'add one with ranlib(1)'?
