What I meant in my post was this. Actually, I tried to install system-xfree86 before, as Emmanuel did. ;-)
Since you still seem to be somewhat confused, let me repeat what Ben said:

- If you installed XFree86 manually from a source outside of Fink, you then install the system-xfree86 package from Fink.

- If you installed one or more of the Fink xfree86-* packages, you do not install system-xfree86.

- These two situations are mutually exclusive.

Or, as it says in "fink info system-xfree86":

system-xfree86-4.2-2: Placeholder package for manually installed XFree86
Install this package if you have XFree86 4.2.0 installed manually. It
will check whether the installation is okay and provide the 'x11'
virtual package.
