[Fink-beginners] window managers and ~/.xinitrc

1. After upgrading to Mac OS 10.2.3 on my dual G4 450 MHz PoweMac, I abandoned attempting to update XDarwin and my installed X-windows applications, because I was unable to stop XDarwin from crashing upon startup; I removed all of XFree86 and fink and previously installed X-windows apps, such as gimp, and started from scratch.

I now think XDarwin crashed because windowmaker could not be found, or the previous wm version was no longer compatible with the new binaries for XDarwin.

I discovered this after installing Fink 0.5.0a (from scratch) and XDarwin (latest version Dec 8) using the fink binary files. I found that windowmaker binaries were not available in stable, and so I had to install another window manager (I chose sawfish) and had to revise my .xinitrc in my home directory to use sawfish and not windowmaker which no longer existed in /sw/bin. Note, updating does not automatically update the .xinitrc file. I still had the file that assumed use of windowmaker. See:

2. I would like to install binary files of unix/X-windows applications from Fink
(using either dselect or FinkCommander). I am using a PowerBook G4 667 MHz with 512 Mb memory running Mac OS 10.2.3. and have the latest (Dec 2002) developer tools installed. I also have the latest version of Fink - 0.5.0a, that is 0.11.1.

However, when I try, I am told that dependencies of the desired application require installing
fink's binary version of xfree86-base, xfree86-rootless, and xfree86-shlibs.

I installed XFree86 version 4.2.0 with the Jaguar update (themselves binary files, I presume), and OroborOSX-v0.8b (also binary files), both of which came on the CD with data analysis software, IDL 5.6 for Mac OSX.

I am concerned that my X11 installation and my window manager and hence my ability to run IDL 5.6, in particular idlde, will be made inoperable, because the fink binaries will overwrite the existing xfree86 installation.

Do you have any suggestions about this? Should I instead download the source files of the application I want to run and compile it myself? Would that avoid the problem altogether? And do I need to first install from fink, the binary file, system-xfree86?
