KDE 3.1 is intensively interacting with Qt3, and that's why you got messed up with KDE 3.1 build.
It would be a nice idea to look over list archives, too. This issue has much discussed on this list and Fink-users list.

The reason I want to do this, is because I removed kde3libs and tried to install it again and qt3 broke. Qt3 and kdebase3 are the bain of my existence.
