Yes I had done that and after that I opened a new terminal window and 
when I do a 'fink selfupdate' it says proxy username could not be resolved.

if I see the setenv it is HTTP_PROXY and http_proxy are
http://username:password@proxy:port

what could be wrong???

For clarification, have you run "fink configure" and entered your proxy
information where you were asked for it?
